Generally, women 18 or older and in good health can be good candidates for breast augmentation. We’ll determine your candidacy during your initial consultation, where we’ll ask you a few questions and learn more about your cosmetic goals.
The ideal age for breast augmentation varies from person to person, depending on several factors. Some women undergo the procedure in their 20s and 30s, while others wait until they’re in their 40s or 50s. It ultimately depends on the patient’s physical and emotional well-being, desired outcome, and health considerations. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Dr. Martin completed medical school and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery residency at University of Missouri, where she was awarded Outstanding Student in Plastic Surgery. While in one of the most competitive integrated residency programs, Dr. Martin participated in multiple research projects, including the development and implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery protocol for breast surgery patients, improving their pain while minimizing use of narcotics, providing patients with the best post-surgical care. Dr. Martin’s interests outside of plastic surgery include her pets, cooking, home improvement projects, traveling, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.
Breast implants differ in size, shape, and material. Both silicone and saline-filled implants have unique characteristics.
Silicone is gelatinous and thick, better resembling the appearance and feel of breast tissue compared to saline.
A minimum age of 22 is required for silicone implants due to FDA regulations.
Saline is saltwater, and is thinner and less gummy than silicone, resulting in a slightly firmer feel with more potential to wrinkle.
Our surgeons, Dr. Epstein and Dr. Martin, incorporate the latest advancements in both technique and technology to provide a surgery that is the safest, least invasive, and most suited to deliver superior results. Breast implants in Chicago are done as outpatient procedures and performed under general anesthesia, meaning patients are asleep for the procedure but can go home the same day. During the surgery, Dr. Epstein or Dr. Martin will insert the breast implant through an incision, usually at the crease of the breast.
The placement and size of the incision may vary depending on the individual anatomy and preference but is typically placed under the breast, as the scar is hidden by the natural breast fold. The implant may be placed into a pocket below the chest muscle, again a decision made with consideration of patient preference. After the surgery, your surgeon, Dr. Epstein or Dr. Martin, will suture the incision and place a skin adhesive over the incision. A supportive garment or bra is then worn until the follow-up clinic appointment.
The procedure typically takes one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, we will make an incision in the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit, depending on the type of implant and your desired outcome. The implant will then be placed either behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle, depending on your anatomy and the type of implant used. Once the implant is in place, we will close the incision with sutures or surgical tape. After the procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery area before being discharged home with a family member or friend.
You will need to wear a special surgical bra for a few weeks to help support your breasts as they heal. While swelling or soreness may last for a few days to a week, you may be able to return to work within a few days, depending on your activity requirements. You will need to avoid strenuous physical exertion and heavy lifting for at least the first few weeks after your surgery.
While you will notice larger, fuller breasts immediately after your surgery, the final results will not be apparent until the initial swelling resolves, which can take several weeks. The expected duration of breast implant appearance depends on the type of implant selected and on individual skin characteristics, which either Dr. Epstein or Dr. Martin will review with you at the time of your visit.
As the years go by, our bodies undergo several changes. The skin is no exception. Collagen production decreases as we age, making it more susceptible to sagging. Breasts with implants may experience sagging due to the added weight of the implant and the natural aging process. The degree varies per patient, as everyone’s body ages differently.

This surgery has no fixed age restriction, and older adults can get stunning results. But certain factors like age do play a role in determining its success and the potential risks involved.
The longevity of breast implants depends on several factors. Most saline and silicone implants last 10-20 years. This doesn’t mean you have to replace your implants every 20 years, though. Many women enjoy their implants for much longer and may need one to two replacements in their lifetime.
