RHINOPLASTY
Rhinoplasty, sometimes known as a nose job, is a cosmetic surgery that changes the appearance of the nose, heavily influencing the overall appearance of a face. A nose that is “out of balance” with its associated features can negatively impact the way we see ourselves. Fortunately, rhinoplasty can restore facial balance and harmony by reshaping a nose considered too big, misshapen, or crooked. In addition, rhinoplasty can potentially improve nasal function or reconstruct the nose following facial trauma.

Dr. Epstein is a plastic surgeon based in Chicago with extensive experience performing rhinoplasty operations, having trained with a multitude of trauma and reconstructive surgeons, otolaryngologists (ENT surgeons), pulmonologists, aesthetic (cosmetic) and plastic surgeons. He believes that patient satisfaction is highest when a rhinoplasty restores natural-looking facial harmony that complements breathing functionality. Furthermore, he focuses on achieving an ideal based on patient preference, while preserving underlying cultural heritage.
Patients appreciate the attentive nature of Dr. Epstein and the time he spends listening to their concerns and answering their questions. He strongly believes in working with each patient to determine the best treatment plan to achieve their goals.
Rhinoplasty scars are often indiscernible, hidden in the shadow under the tip of the nose or within the nose itself. The location of the scar depends on the type of nose job performed.
Rhinoplasty before and after pictures depict real patients and are chosen to represent examples of achievable results. Depending on your goals for nasal shape, anatomy, and function, Dr. Epstein can help guide you to your optimal result. As with any surgical procedure, results differ per patient.*

There are a few things you should do to prepare for rhinoplasty. If you smoke, you will need to quit well in advance of your procedure. Smoking before surgery puts you at a higher risk for complications, blood clots, etc. Therefore, quitting 4-6 weeks before your surgery and staying smoke-free 4 weeks following it can decrease your rate of wound complications by up to 50%.
Additionally, you should read up on the potential risks and the recovery process. You will need to purchase some items in preparation for your recovery, as well as arrange for a ride to and from the clinic.
Rhinoplasty is typically a same-day, outpatient surgery conducted in a surgical facility. Patients are put to sleep with general anesthesia, and the duration of the operation depends on the complexity of the desired outcome. Usually a rhinoplasty takes somewhere between 3 and 5 hours to perform.
After surgery, Dr. Epstein will cover your nose with a splint. The splint protects the new shape of your nose, reduces swelling, and is typically worn for a week. Most patients have some mild bruising and swelling for a few weeks after the procedure, and may usually return to work within a week should they choose. The appearance of the nose will continue to improve for up to a year after surgery.
All patients will experience some level of swelling in the weeks and months following rhinoplasty surgery. Therefore, it is important to follow all preoperative instructions provided by your surgeon. Cold compresses, as well as prescription medication, can help alleviate the swelling.
Most people can return to their usual activities within two weeks after undergoing rhinoplasty procedure. Strenuous physical exercise in which you sweat or increase your blood pressure or heart rate, is discouraged for at least six weeks as it can delay or worsen swelling. Additionally, you should also avoid contact sports or anything that puts you at risk of bumping your nose for a few months.
At times, teenagers may be interested in a nose job. While such a procedure may potentially improve a teenager’s self-esteem and self-perception, not all teenagers are good candidates for this cosmetic surgery, as they may still be growing. Peak growth has typically completed between the ages of 15 and 16 for young women and between the ages of 17 or 18 for young men. The best way to discover if nasal surgery is right for your teenager is via a consultation with Dr. Epstein.
Like with any surgical procedures, rhinoplasty surgery does carry some risk. Possible risks such as bleeding or infection are discussed prior to rhinoplasty surgery. Patients who choose an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon such as Dr. Epstein will find that complications are quite rare.
RHINOPLASTY FAQS
Surgical incisions during rhinoplasty are performed in a more controlled way so that they are very difficult to see. When using the external, or open approach to rhinoplasty, there is a small incision or scar that is made along the base of the nose. With a closed, or endonasal, approach, all incisions are made on the inside of the nose.
No, undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure is not painful since it is performed under anesthesia. Additionally, patients are given pain medicine for the first few days following surgery. However, most patients do not experience significant discomfort.
Yes. Many patients have rhinoplasty performed with another facial or body procedure. For example, it’s common for patients to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure in combination with a blepharoplasty or breast augmentation. During your consultation with Dr. Epstein, you can discuss your surgical goals to learn which procedures can be done during the same operation.
An ideal candidate for a rhinoplasty procedure is an individual who is in good health, does not smoke, and whose facial growth is complete. Additionally, this person should also have realistic expectations for the results a rhinoplasty procedure can achieve.
